Roy Keane Calls for Harsh Punishment for Manchester City Amidst Financial Charges

Roy Keane has asserted that Manchester City deserves significant punishment after being found guilty of a substantial portion of the 115 Premier League charges leveled against them. The charges, which alleged widespread financial doping during an era of the club's success, have seen the Premier League succeed in proving the core claims.

Manchester City is expected to appeal the decision. Potential sanctions could include the stripping of titles won during the period in question, relegation from the top flight, or substantial financial penalties. Keane commented on the verdict, stating that the club must "take their medicine" for their alleged actions. He specifically disagreed with player Rodri's assertion that the club's titles were "deserved," emphasizing that the club "chose to cheat."

"Whatever they have won over the last few years, they deserve to be punished," Keane said. "They were cheating. They've been found guilty of it and they have to take their medicine now. It was a shock to be found guilty of so many of the charges."

Ian Wright echoed Keane's sentiments, calling for severe sanctions against the club. He argued that such actions unfairly impacted other teams that competed legitimately.

"They may have been able to experience those memories and all those great times together but when you look at the teams chasing them who were doing it right, it's not right," Wright stated. "What have we taken from Liverpool and Klopp's legacy, and that team? What could they have experienced? They cheated to get it done and other players have missed out on that."

Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak expressed confidence in the club's innocence, stating in a letter to fans that the Premier League's process "still has a long way to run" and that their "confidence in proving the club’s innocence remains as strong as it was when this began."

Reports suggest that the Premier League's successful prosecution could trigger a series of legal claims amounting to as much as £800 million. Clubs such as Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, and Manchester United had previously issued notices reserving their right to take action if City was found guilty. These clubs reportedly feel they lost potential income due to City's alleged financial irregularities, with some seeking substantial compensation.
