Rowers Rescue Bride's Veil from River in Hilarious Wedding Day Mishap

A wedding celebration took an unexpected turn when a bride's veil was swept into a river, but quick-thinking rowers were on hand to rescue the cherished item.

Tina and Steve Appleford were posing for wedding photos by the River Great Ouse in Bedford, England, on September 18, shortly after their ceremony. A sudden gust of wind dislodged the bride's veil, sending it airborne and directly into the water.

Attempts by the groom's groomsmen to retrieve the veil before it floated away were unsuccessful. However, two members of the local Star Club Rowing team witnessed the unfolding drama and offered their assistance.

The rowers skillfully used their oars to prevent the veil from sinking and maneuvered their boat close enough to retrieve it. The bride, Tina, described the incident as "hilarious," although the veil, which had turned green from the river water, had to be discarded.

"We got married at the Bedford Swan Hotel and we went across the river for some photos," Tina, 54, recounted. "They took one of me lying down in the arms of the lads, and that’s when the veil flew off. My husband thought it was a bird coming for him at first and ducked out of the way. We only noticed it was gone after we’d rearranged ourselves. One of our friends noticed some rowers, and they said, ‘don’t worry, I’ll save it.’"

Wedding photographer Samantha Laird, from Laird and Lens Photography, captured the unexpected event. She noted that while the wind was not particularly strong that day, a "freak gust" caused the veil to fly into the river.

"A couple of the groom’s friends tried working out a way to rescue it whilst the bride was laughing, luckily, saying: ‘This is hilarious’," Laird said. "One of the men saw the rowers travelling up towards us and ran down towards them to ask for help."

The rowers, described as "young lads from the rowing club," worked together to recover the veil. After an initial attempt to throw it back resulted in it falling into the river again, they managed to secure it. A guest then met them at a lower point along the riverbank to take possession of the veil.

Despite the need to discard the veil due to water damage, Tina stated that the incident added to the memorable nature of their wedding day.
