Rosie O'Donnell, 64, is embracing her role as a grandmother, recently welcoming her fifth grandchild, Anthony Joel O'Donnell, on March 26. The comedian shared a photo of the four-month-old on Wednesday, doting on her "beautiful grandson Anthony." The newborn is the son of her son Blake and his wife Teresa.
"Watching my 26-year-old son hold his baby is the most indescribable joy that I've ever experienced in my life," O'Donnell told People magazine. "I want to be here for all of it." She expressed surprise at the enduring need children have for their parents throughout their lives, a sentiment amplified by her own experiences.
O'Donnell relocated to Dublin in January 2025 with her 13-year-old non-binary child, Clay, ahead of a potential second term for President Donald Trump. Her son Blake had encouraged the move, expressing a desire for her to be closer to his family.
"My son said, 'Mommy, I want you to move back. I want you to be around my baby. I want you to be around us,'" O'Donnell recalled. "That really hit home because I understand, and, you know, the joy that I feel being around him and this newborn... Again, I don't have the words for it."
The comedian, whose grandparents were Irish, is reportedly in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship. Despite Trump's past threats to revoke her citizenship, he cannot legally do so under the 14th Amendment.
O'Donnell has faced challenges bonding with some of her other grandchildren. Her 28-year-old daughter, Chelsea, struggled with addiction during the early lives of her children. Chelsea, who has been sober for 18 months and was convicted of drug possession and other offenses, has reconnected with O'Donnell, who visited her in prison.
"There's finally hope on the horizon," O'Donnell said of Chelsea's recovery, though she expressed worry about the future. "It's hard to hope because it's been so devastating as so many people know. She calls every day and we talk."
O'Donnell has five children: Chelsea, Blake, Parker (31), Vivienne (23), and Clay. She adopted Clay during her marriage to Michelle Rounds. O'Donnell is currently performing her one-woman show, "Rosie O'Donnell: Common Knowledge," and is slated to appear in the upcoming heist film "4 Kids Walk Into a Bank" and guest host "Jimmy Kimmel Live."
