Rory McIlroy Shifts Stance on LIV Golf, Calls it 'Half a Good Idea'

Golfer Rory McIlroy has softened his stance on LIV Golf, describing the controversial breakaway tour as having "half of a good idea" that was "executed pretty poorly." He made these remarks during the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi.

McIlroy, who was once a vocal critic of LIV Golf, reflected on the league's use of capital, stating it was "wasted in some ways." He suggested the funds could have been utilized more strategically, potentially through partnerships with existing golf governing bodies, rather than solely enriching already well-compensated tour professionals.

These comments come as LIV Golf faces Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings after its funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) was reportedly cut off. McIlroy acknowledged that the PIF's withdrawal likely made it easier to adopt a more measured perspective on the league.

Previously, McIlroy had expressed a more critical view of LIV Golf. However, his perspective has evolved over time, particularly in recent months. In May, he suggested that allowing LIV players to return to the PGA Tour would be "good business."

When asked at the forum if he would support the return of LIV players to the PGA Tour, McIlroy reiterated his positive outlook. "Yes, I would," he stated. "A rising tide lifts all boats, and I think having some of these players back is beneficial for the business of the tours."
