Viewers of the docuseries "The Real Rooneys" were presented with a narrative of Wayne and Coleen Rooney taking a romantic getaway to the Scottish Highlands to reconnect amid marital difficulties. However, recent revelations suggest the trip was not solely a private couple's retreat as depicted.
While the show focuses on the couple's activities, including clay-pigeon shooting and whisky tasting at the five-star Cameron House Hotel, it omits their interactions with several friends. According to reports, former Manchester United teammates Michael Carrick and Darron Gibson, along with their wives Lisa and Danielle respectively, were also part of the September 2025 mini-break.
Evidence from social media indicates the couples spent time together. On September 23, 2025, Danielle Gibson shared an Instagram post featuring herself, Coleen, and Lisa, stating they had been clay-pigeon shooting. Coleen's attire in this photograph matches what she wore during the whisky-tasting segment shown on the series. A day later, Wayne Rooney posted photos of himself and Coleen with Loch Lomond in the background, and another showing both couples dining at the Gleneagles Hotel, an hour's drive from their accommodation.
A source close to the show commented that the trip did not reflect the "real" nature of the couple's experiences, implying the on-screen portrayal was curated. A spokesperson for the Rooneys stated that the couple attended a golf invitational event in Scotland, which was also attended by other celebrities. They added that the subsequent part of their trip to Cameron House was solely as a couple, accompanied only by their production crew.
The ten-part series, which premiered recently, has faced criticism for its perceived lack of authenticity. One reviewer described the show as an "exercise in pretence," suggesting it was "highly staged propaganda" rather than an unvarnished look at the Rooneys' lives. The series offers glimpses into their £10 million Cheshire mansion and touches on Coleen's commercial dealings, including a partnership with Primark, and Wayne's contract with Gary Neville's Overlap firm, which is now part of Disney+.
