Rooneys Defend Son Kai Against 'Nepo Baby' Claims

Coleen and Wayne Rooney have addressed accusations that their eldest son, Kai, is a "nepo baby," asserting that the 16-year-old has earned his achievements through merit.

Kai Rooney is currently pursuing a football scholarship with Manchester United and has also secured modeling campaigns with Puma. His parents highlighted his dedication and intelligence in a recent interview, countering claims that his opportunities are solely due to his father's celebrated football career. Wayne Rooney stated his desire for Kai to achieve milestones based on his own abilities, not his surname.

"I think Kai is a prime example of not being a nepo baby," Coleen Rooney said. "He has always wanted to be a footballer, but he has intelligence, he's an intelligent lad." She pointed to his academic success, including excelling in his GCSEs, and his fluency in Spanish, which he developed independently by communicating with an Argentinian friend.

Wayne Rooney echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Kai has "earned that right to go and play for Man United and getting that contract." He added that he has personally communicated with the club, stating that if Kai were not performing well, he would not want him to be there due to his own legacy.

The Rooney family's life and Kai's football aspirations are featured in their new Disney+ docuseries, "The Real Rooneys." The series documents Kai's pursuit of his scholarship and also includes scenes of him participating in a Puma photoshoot, with his younger brother Klay observing.

Coleen noted that while they guide their children, they do not force them into specific paths. "They've got to want to do it and love what they're doing so whatever they choose we'll support and guide them," she explained.

Wayne reflected on the potential significance of Kai signing with Manchester United, calling it "full circle" for the family. He also humorously admitted he is an emotional person, prone to crying at various things, including television dramas.

Coleen expressed a concern about Kai leaving home at 16 if he does not secure a scholarship. Kai himself stated his ambition to play at the highest level and be proud of his achievements as both a player and a person.

Paul Stretford, the Rooneys' long-time manager, acknowledged the significant interest in the Rooney name and Kai's potential in a competitive field.

The docuseries, "The Real Rooneys," reportedly resulted from a bidding war between Disney+ and Amazon, with Disney+ securing the rights for a substantial fee. Sources indicate Coleen Rooney is set to receive a significant portion of the production budget.
