A rookie New York City Police Department officer is suspected in the fatal shooting of his brother, authorities said. The 24-year-old victim was found deceased early Saturday morning in an apartment building located near Fredrick Douglass Boulevard and Macombs Place in Upper Manhattan.
Police were called to the scene around 1:32 a.m. after a 911 call, according to the NYPD. Responding officers discovered the man with a gunshot wound to his right eye. Emergency Medical Services pronounced him dead at the scene. The victim's identity has not yet been released pending family notification.
The NYPD's Force Investigation Division, which handles cases involving police officers in shootings, has taken over the investigation. Detectives are reportedly examining whether the shooting was accidental or if the victim may have shot himself.
Officials from the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner were seen removing a black body bag on a stretcher, which was then loaded into a van. Crime scene unit officers were also present, with one investigator seen carrying a box labeled 'Evidence - Handle With Care.' Large paper bags were also removed from the apartment by law enforcement.
No arrests have been made as the investigation continues. The exact circumstances of the shooting remain unclear.
