Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old rookie lifeguard, has described the critical moments during a dramatic rescue on July 25 at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California. Williams pulled 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai from powerful 8-to-10-foot surf, an act that earned him national attention and praise from President Trump, who announced the teen will receive a high civilian honor.
Williams recounted the experience, stating that as he reached the child, Nathaniel went limp. "I’m thinking about if he’s unconscious or not, that I really need to go in," Williams said. He spotted the boy in ankle-deep water after a strong wave swept him off his feet. Sprinting into the rough surf, Williams found his fins ineffective due to the shallow water. "I was unable to pull him out because he was limp and the waves were pushing so hard," he recalled. His primary concern became maintaining their position against the powerful currents until his partner could arrive.
Despite bystanders attempting to assist, Williams directed them back to shore. His lifeguard partner arrived and took over holding the child, as Williams' arms were exhausted from the effort. Together, they managed to bring the boy out of the water.
Nathaniel's father, Sumit Rai, expressed immense gratitude, calling the rescue a miracle and crediting Williams with saving his son's life. After reaching shore, Nathaniel coughed up sand and remained in shock, telling his father he had drowned and lost consciousness.
Williams emphasized that such rescues are part of the daily duty of lifeguards. He returned to his post after the rescue and continued performing his duties, noting the importance of teamwork among the lifeguards on duty that day.
The incident has led Williams to advocate for greater public awareness of ocean conditions and rip currents, urging beachgoers to consult with lifeguards or conduct research before entering the water. He highlighted that lifeguards perform thousands of rescues globally each day and that his actions were in line with his professional responsibilities.
Despite the increased attention, Williams stated the experience reinforced his commitment to lifeguarding, finding it rewarding to help people and learn about beach safety.
