A partial roof collapse at a BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, New Jersey, triggered a significant emergency response on Monday when severe weather caused a section of the roof to give way, trapping multiple individuals inside.
Authorities confirmed that 27 people were in the store at the time of the incident, which occurred just after 11:15 a.m. local time. While two individuals were briefly partially trapped in the debris, they managed to free themselves. No injuries were reported.
Emergency personnel, including specialized rescue units and K-9 teams from New Jersey Urban Search and Rescue, conducted primary and secondary searches of the structurally compromised building to ensure it was clear. The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office utilized an interior drone for the search.
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden commended the first responders for their coordinated efforts amidst ongoing severe weather and flooding in the area. "This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions," Golden stated.
Ocean Township Police Chief Michael Sorrentino advised motorists and residents to avoid the area, particularly Route 35, Park Avenue, and Deal Road between Routes 18 and 35, due to ongoing emergency operations.
