Ronny Mauricio Gets Another Mets Call-Up as Season Winds Down

Ronny Mauricio has been recalled by the New York Mets for his fourth appearance with the team this season, a brief call-up as the year nears its end. The move comes in the wake of Jared Young's season-ending injury.

Mauricio, now 25, is concluding a season where he has not yet established himself at the major league level, a trajectory impacted by injuries. His initial opportunity for extended playing time in late April, which followed Francisco Lindor’s calf strain and coincided with a need at shortstop, lasted only eight games. A fractured left thumb then sidelined him for nearly two months.

Despite this setback, Mauricio has spent most of the season with Triple-A Syracuse. There, he has performed solidly, posting a .795 OPS with 18 home runs and 12 stolen bases in 71 games while playing second base, third base, and shortstop. However, this performance has not been enough to secure consistent playing time in the majors, even for a team looking toward the future.

"We’ll get him out there for sure," interim manager Andy Green said before the Mets' 6-3 victory over the Phillies at Citi Field. "Ronny’s had a nice Triple-A season. We’ll find a way to get him some at-bats." The Mets have only eight games remaining in their season.

Mauricio was once considered the club's No. 3 prospect in 2023, ranked behind Francisco Alvarez and Brett Baty, according to MLB Pipeline. A torn ACL during a Dominican Winter League game in 2023 derailed his 2024 campaign and delayed his start to 2025.

Since his return, Mauricio has moved between the minors and majors without securing a permanent spot at the highest level. This year marks the final season he can be optioned to the minor leagues without being subject to waivers. This offseason, the Mets will have the decision of whether to tender him a contract.

In other team news, Juan Soto hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, marking his 100th hit and 26th home run of the season in 103 games. Carson Benge's RBI single in the first inning brought his hit total to 153 for the season, placing him two shy of Pete Alonso's single-season franchise rookie record from 2019.

Dedniel Núñez earned his first save of the season, and second of his career, by recording a four-out save. With Young on the injured list due to a concussion, Brett Baty started at first base against a left-handed opener and an expected bulk pitcher. Green indicated that Baty, Mark Vientos (serving as DH), and Christopher Morel are expected to see time at first base.

The Mets are scheduled to induct Carlos Beltrán into the team’s Hall of Fame and retire his No. 15 in an on-field ceremony prior to Saturday's game.
