Ronny Chieng, host of "The Daily Show," dedicated a recent monologue to satirizing former President Donald Trump's intervention in a FIFA decision regarding U.S. soccer player Folarin Balogun. Chieng mocked Trump's attempt to overturn Balogun's suspension during the World Cup, particularly after the U.S. team was eliminated from the tournament by Belgium.
Chieng humorously characterized this intervention as antithetical to American ideals, suggesting a shift from perceived heroism to villainy. "Thanks to Trump, said Chieng, 'we went from being the heroes of our own Disney sports movie to being the villain in some weird European film.'
During the segment, Chieng presented a caricature of American assertiveness, joking, 'This is America, bitch. The land of the Karen. And when life hands us lemons, we call life’s manager and say, ‘Take these lemons back and let Balogun play.’' He further quipped about the perceived corruption, stating, 'If you’re thinking this is corrupt, well, fuck yeah, it is.'
Expanding on this theme, Chieng questioned adherence to established rules, asking, 'Because that’s America’s style of play. You think we’re going to obey soccer rules?' He extended the satire by adding, 'We don’t even listen to the Geneva Convention.'
