Ronnie O'Sullivan Faces Potential World Championship Qualifying Battle

Seven-time world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan is facing a challenging period in the 2026-27 season, with his position in the world's top 16 rankings under threat. His current season has seen a quiet start, with only one significant result—a semi-final appearance at the Wuhan Open—in his five tournaments to date. Previous runs to the last 16 have been followed by first-round exits in Shenzhen and Belfast.

O'Sullivan currently holds a cushion of £99,350 over 16th-ranked Ali Carter and £154,650 over Zhou Yuelong in 17th place. While this appears comfortable, a substantial portion of his earnings, specifically £200,000 from the 2025 Saudi Arabia Masters final, will soon fall out of the two-year ranking period. This prize money, from a tournament that has since been abolished, will no longer count towards his ranking after the start of the 2027-28 season.

To maintain an automatic spot in the 2028 World Championship, O'Sullivan will likely need strong performances over the next 18 months. He has operated on a reduced schedule in recent years, often citing medical reasons or the need to prioritize his mental health for withdrawals from tournaments. His participation has predominantly been in Asia during the 2025-26 season, with only two tournaments in Britain outside of the Triple Crown events.

O'Sullivan has expressed that he would not compete in World Championship qualifying if he were to slip out of the top 16, stating he would retire instead. He has set a personal deadline of 2028 to potentially surpass Stephen Hendry's record of seven world titles, indicating he believes he has only two more chances to win the championship. "I'm not going to play qualifiers. You won't be seeing me go down to Barnsley trying to win qualifying matches and all that sort of stuff," O'Sullivan told World Snooker Tour in July. "If that happens, then obviously that's the end of my career. But hopefully, I can keep going for at least another two seasons."

This potential challenge to his ranking comes after O'Sullivan's last ranking title at the World Grand Prix in January 2025. He has threatened retirement multiple times throughout his career, but his longevity has been remarkable, with his first World Championship win in 2001 and his most recent in 2022. However, with declining form and the associated impact on prize money, the end of his illustrious career may be approaching.
