Ronaldo Addresses National Team Departure in Lengthy Statement

Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence regarding his departure from the Portugal national team camp, issuing a lengthy statement detailing his perspective on events that led to his early exit. The 41-year-old forward addressed perceived broken promises from coach Jorge Jesus and offered apologies to Portuguese fans and his teammates.

Ronaldo stated that after the 2026 World Cup, he had intended to write a letter to the Portuguese people upon his eventual permanent departure from the team. However, he explained that the President of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) asked him to reconsider leaving the national side. During this discussion, the Federation President also sought Ronaldo's opinion on the potential appointment of a new head coach, a choice Jesus ultimately made.

Ronaldo expressed initial happiness with Jesus's appointment, believing it to be the right decision. He recounted a meeting with Jesus, arranged at the player's request during his holiday, where the coach assured him of his fundamental importance to the team's project and outlined a plan for his participation. This plan, Ronaldo stated, included playing specific matches and managing his physical load.

However, Ronaldo revealed that Jesus then proposed he not travel for matches in Norway and Denmark, suggesting he stay in Portugal and rejoin the squad later. Ronaldo immediately refused this proposal, deeming it a poor example. He noted that this conversation was attended by Simão Coutinho, the sporting director of Al Nassr and a figure involved in Jesus's signing.

A subsequent meeting at Ronaldo's home reportedly reaffirmed the initial agreements. Ronaldo played in a match at Alvalade, and while substituted, he accepted the decision. He recalled placing the captain's armband on Bruno Fernandes, unaware it might be his last game for the national team.

The situation escalated on the eve of the match in Norway when an assistant informed Ronaldo that the coach wished to speak with him. To Ronaldo's surprise, Jesus asked if he was fit to play 30 minutes, a request that deviated from his recovery plan. Ronaldo agreed, and was subsequently asked to warm up but was not brought into the game. He described this as a breach of the coach's word.

Ronaldo stated that after the match, he wanted to be alone and did not greet the fans, an action he takes sole responsibility for and apologizes for. He later had a conversation with Jesus and Coutinho, aiming to resolve the situation. They agreed that Jesus would publicly clarify that Ronaldo had not asked to play specific minutes, that the coach proposed the plan, and that the decision to warm him up and not play him was a mistake.

Ronaldo claimed that Jesus promised to address the matter in the press conference and apologize, a commitment he said was not met. He described Jesus's subsequent press conference as aggressive and contradictory to their private discussion. Ronaldo presented notes from their meeting that he validated, which stated that the coach had proposed the plan, Ronaldo had accepted it, and that it was a mistake to warm him up and not play him.

Citing this as the second time the coach had broken his word, Ronaldo decided to leave the camp. He emphasized the importance of truth in relationships and stated that he felt his remaining would harm the team.

Ronaldo also apologized to his teammates for leaving the camp, taking full responsibility for his actions. He acknowledged that the Portuguese Football Federation should assess and punish his conduct, understanding that his role as captain could be seen as an aggravating factor.

Regarding discussions about a farewell match, Ronaldo stated that no one gives anything to anyone, but he promised his fans and the Portuguese people that there would be opportunities for farewell matches in the future. He concluded by asserting his continued availability to compete for Portugal, provided he is physically well and serving any suspension, emphasizing his commitment to winning for his country.
