Romanian National Jailed for Christmas Eve Fatal DUI Crash, Seeks Deportation

Nicolae Brica, 48, was driving nearly twice the legal alcohol limit when his vehicle mounted a pavement in Norwich and struck two brothers in the early hours of December 24 last year. The impact killed Thomas Plane, 28, who was trapped beneath the car, and seriously injured his brother, James.

Residents reported hearing screams before discovering the scene. Police officers on patrol in the area arrived shortly after the incident. Brica was breathalysed and registered 72 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath, more than double the legal limit of 35.

Appearing at Norwich Crown Court, Brica pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, causing death by careless driving, and causing serious injury by careless driving. He received a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence and a five-year driving disqualification. Brica, who had indefinite leave to remain in the UK, expressed a desire to be deported after serving his sentence.

The court heard that the brothers had been cycling home after celebrating with friends and family. One brother was reportedly attending to the other's injuries when Brica's car collided with them.

Detective Constable Dylan Thomas stated that the incident had a "lifelong impact" on the family. "A young man lost his life and his twin brother suffered serious injuries, all as a result of a driver choosing to get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol," he said. "This tragedy was entirely preventable. Brica made the decision to drive after drinking alcohol, and that decision had catastrophic consequences."

He urged the public to consider the consequences of drinking and driving, emphasizing that "one poor choice can change lives forever."
