Romanian Man's Staged Arrest in Russia Highlights Spy Case Discrepancies

A video released by Russia's FSB security service, allegedly depicting the arrest of David Adrian Kercso, a Romanian citizen sentenced to 15 years for spying, appears to have been staged, according to a Reuters analysis. The analysis of the video and court records indicates that Kercso was already in Russian custody for months when the arrest footage was filmed.

Discrepancies in Arrest Narrative

The video shows Kercso, now 23, being apprehended in a park in Sochi. However, his initial arrest was announced by pro-Russian separatists in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia, who released their own video of him in their custody the day before he appeared in a Russian court. The FSB did not respond to requests for comment regarding the staged arrest video.

Kercso's family states he was lured to the Black Sea coast for a romance with a woman he met online. His mother, Julia Kercso, warned him against traveling to the region due to the ongoing conflict, but he proceeded with the visit in August 2024.

Path to Detention

While living in Reading, England, Kercso connected online with a woman from Abkhazia named Valeria. After meeting her in Sochi, he traveled to Abkhazia, where he remained through the autumn of 2024. According to Kercso's accounts to his family, the relationship deteriorated, and he planned to return home on November 28, 2024. He stopped responding to communication that day, later stating in letters from prison that this was when he was arrested in Abkhazia.

The Abkhazian separatist authorities announced his arrest on December 13, releasing a video of their security service escorting him. In this video, Kercso appeared to confess to contacting Ukrainian intelligence and being tasked with filming military sites. He later claimed in letters that this confession was based on a script dictated by his captors.

Transfer and Filming of Staged Arrest

Following his transfer across the border to Russian custody, Kercso appeared in a Russian court in Sochi on December 14, 2024. His detention was repeatedly extended over the following four months. The staged FSB arrest video, according to Kercso's letters, was filmed in mid-April 2025, after he had been in Russian custody for four months. Reuters' analysis of the video, which shows green foliage, supports a spring filming date, aligning with Kercso's account.

The filming location has been identified as a park along the Matsesta River in Sochi, based on matching visible features with satellite imagery.

Allegations of Torture and Coerced Confessions

Evgeny Smirnov, a Russian lawyer familiar with such cases, noted that it is common for the FSB to stage arrest videos of suspects who have already been detained for extended periods. Kercso alleges in his letters that he was subjected to beatings, isolation, and torture following his transfer to Russia. He also claims his confession to transmitting information about Russian air-defense systems to Ukrainian intelligence was coerced.

"None of that happened, they stole my life for no reason and fabricated everything," Kercso wrote. He has learned Russian in prison and expressed deep regret over his decision to travel to the region, stating he was "blinded by love."
