Roland Mouret Recounts Encounters with Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham
The designer details a misunderstanding that led to Meghan Markle refusing to wear his designs again and shares insights into his early work with Victoria Beckham.
Designer Roland Mouret has shared accounts of his interactions with both Meghan Markle and Victoria Beckham, detailing a significant misunderstanding with the Duchess of Sussex that led to her decision to stop wearing his creations. Mouret's memoir, "I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher's Boy Who Dressed the World," also touches upon his collaboration with Beckham at the beginning of her fashion career.
Regarding Meghan Markle, Mouret recounted an incident where his fashion house mistakenly requested the return of gifted clothing items. The error, he explained, was that the request was made through the office of Catherine, Princess of Wales, rather than directly to Meghan's team. This, he said, led to Meghan feeling humiliated and vowing never to wear his designs again.
"Meghan was furious and called me," Mouret wrote, as detailed in The Times. "You don't realise what you've done! You've embarrassed me." He stated that his apology was not accepted, and Meghan allegedly told him, "You know now I can never wear your clothes again." Mouret claims that he later saw Meghan wearing a less expensive imitation of one of his designs and messaged her about it, prompting her to suggest they meet. Mouret noted that Meghan's decision to cease wearing his clothes was her own, and he did not question her reasoning at the time, despite finding it illogical. The Duchess of Sussex's representatives declined to comment on the account.
Mouret also detailed his early professional relationship with Victoria Beckham, whom he assisted when she launched her fashion brand in 2008. Beckham had previously spoken on her Netflix series about Mouret questioning her decisions during the label's formative stages, admitting she cried frequently while working with him. Mouret, however, stated in his memoir that he "never set out to make or cry" and does not recall such incidents. He recalled meeting Beckham and her husband, David, for dinner before their professional collaboration, during which Beckham reportedly asked if he fancied her husband, a question Mouret denied, humorously asserting that "lots of gay men fancy me."
