Roland Mouret Recalls Meghan Markle's 'Furious' Reaction to Clothing Mishap

Fashion designer Roland Mouret has recounted an incident that led to the Duchess of Sussex declaring she could never wear his clothes again. In his memoir, "I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher's Boy Who Dressed the World," Mouret details how his fashion house "embarrassed" Meghan after a staff member mistakenly contacted the Princess of Wales's office to arrange the return of loaned garments.

According to Mouret, Meghan was "furious" and called him directly after the blunder, stating, "You don't realise what you've done! You've embarrassed me." She allegedly refused to accept his apology and informed him, "You know now I can never wear your clothes again." Mouret claims that Meghan later wore a "cheap high street copy" of one of his designs, prompting him to text her that she was being "ridiculous" and urging her to "come back."

Mouret wrote in his memoir that Meghan's decision to stop wearing his designs was her own, and he did not question it, though he found her choice to wear a copy "ridiculous."

He also shared anecdotes about his relationship with Victoria Beckham, whom he helped at the start of her fashion career. Beckham had spoken on a Netflix series about her early days building her label, suggesting Mouret would question her decisions and that she cried often while working with him. Mouret, however, insisted in his memoir that he "never set out to make or cry" and does not recall such an event. He wrote, "I knew I would never do anything to Victoria to hurt her. I would never set out to make her cry."

Mouret recalled meeting David Beckham over dinner before he began working with Victoria. He mentioned that Victoria later asked if he fancied her husband, a query he deflected by stating that while many gay men might find David attractive, he did not, and that many gay men fancied him.

Mouret's past interactions with the Duchess of Sussex are also detailed. He described meeting Meghan in a hotel lift in Istanbul in 2015, where she was wearing a bathrobe. They quickly bonded, and she later confided in him about her relationship with Prince Harry before it became public. Mouret offered to send her clothes for her anticipated public life, which she accepted.

The fashion house sent a selection of garments to the palace, with instructions for the team not to follow up or discuss the matter. The friendship reportedly soured months later when the same team member who had sent the clothes contacted Kate's stylist at Kensington Palace for their return, rather than directly addressing Meghan's team.

Mouret has designed dresses for Catherine, Princess of Wales, since 2011. He commented in his book that if she could avoid fame, she likely would choose to do so, despite her public role.

A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex declined to comment on the matter. The incidents described by Mouret occurred after Meghan and Harry's relationship became public but before their departure from royal duties in 2020.
