Rockstar Games has publicly addressed a significant leak of footage from its highly anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto 6. In a statement, the company described the unauthorized clips, which began appearing online last week, as "heartbreaking" for the development team. The leaks showed gameplay and cinematic elements of the upcoming game.
"This is not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time," Rockstar stated. The company apologized for the delay in official updates but committed to exceeding fan expectations in an upcoming special preview on Netflix.
Initially, there was some uncertainty about the authenticity of the leaked videos. However, as more clips emerged and were subsequently removed from social media platforms via copyright claims, evidence pointed to their legitimacy. Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, initiated legal proceedings related to the leaks in a New York court on Friday.
Rockstar acknowledged that the leaks may have impacted the intended player experience by introducing spoilers. The company also expressed gratitude for the messages of support received from fans, stating, "Your words have meant more to the team than you can imagine."
Allegations have surfaced suggesting the leaker is acting in the interest of players, accusing Rockstar of anti-consumer practices, such as the decision not to release a disc version of Grand Theft Auto 6 at launch. However, some observers question these claims, noting that the uploads have invited cryptocurrency donations to the user responsible for sharing the material.
