Robertson Criticizes Scotland's Performance After Slovenia Defeat

Scotland captain Andy Robertson has voiced his strong dissatisfaction with the team's performance following their 2-1 defeat to Slovenia in the Nations League, describing the squad as "outfought" and "not good enough." The loss at Hampden Park followed a promising win against North Macedonia, with Scotland unable to build on that momentum.

Slovenia secured the victory with second-half goals from Danijel Sturm and Aljosa Matko, overturning a first-half lead given to Scotland by Ryan Christie's backheel. Robertson lamented the team's inability to replicate their previous positive performance, questioning the reasons behind their subpar showing.

"We didn't do the good things we did on Saturday, I don't know what that's down to," Robertson told BBC Sport Scotland. "They caused us a lot of problems and we have to find the reasons why. We wanted to kick on from Saturday because we had a really positive feeling about what we're doing and where we're going. We didn't do that."

Robertson suggested that while Scotland might sometimes lack quality or make mistakes, being outfought is unacceptable. He noted that Slovenia appeared fresher and more hungry, despite both teams having played the same number of recent matches. Manager Sebastien Pocognoli echoed his captain's assessment, admitting Scotland "didn't deserve to get the win" and were "far from strong enough in the duels."

Pocognoli, who took over as Scotland manager in August aiming for a more aggressive style, has seen mixed results in his early tenure. A goalless draw in Slovenia was followed by a 3-0 defeat to Switzerland, before the win against North Macedonia. However, this latest loss has cast doubt on the team's progress.

Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday commented that Pocognoli's "period of grace is now over," calling the performance against Slovenia one of the poorest he could recall. Analyst Willie Miller raised concerns about Pocognoli's preferred back-three system, noting the significant gaps that appeared between defenders and how Slovenia exploited them. Miller questioned whether the manager would consider abandoning the system after this display.
