Robert Kraft Pledges $2 Million to Palestinian Relief Efforts Following Ed Sheeran's Appeal

Billionaire businessman Robert Kraft has committed $2 million to Palestinian relief efforts, a decision he stated was prompted by a personal appeal from musician Ed Sheeran.

Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots and The Kraft Group, announced the donation on Wednesday, noting that the commitment was made before rapper Macklemore publicly challenged him to match his own $1 million contribution. According to a statement shared by Kraft, Sheeran contacted him earlier in the day to request the significant donation to aid those affected by the humanitarian crisis in the region.

"Ed now plans to reach out to other venue owners and our goal is to continue to work together to build bridges," Kraft's statement read. The 85-year-old businessman emphasized his lifelong dedication to fostering unity and his belief that "all lives are worth protecting."

Kraft also highlighted his long-standing involvement in initiatives aimed at supporting Palestinians. "For decades, I have supported efforts that create opportunity for Palestinians and have brought young Palestinians and Israelis together to build businesses, create jobs, and forge relationships," he stated.

The donation follows Macklemore's pledge to donate $1 million, generated from Sheeran's "Loop Tour," to Palestinian relief. Macklemore was subsequently removed from the tour following his "Free Palestine" speech at a recent concert in New Jersey. This action led to Sheeran's other tour openers, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Rowe, along with Sheeran's own backing band, dropping out of the tour in solidarity with Macklemore.

Sheeran addressed the controversy in a statement, expressing his dismay over the conflict between Israel and Palestine. He clarified that Macklemore's removal from the tour was the decision of the promoter, not his own, and that Macklemore's contract was with the promoter. Sheeran stated he attempted to mediate between the parties, including speaking with Kraft, but was unsuccessful in building a bridge.

Macklemore, however, indicated in his own social media posts that Sheeran and his team had made the decision to remove him from the tour. He recounted conversations with Sheeran where he reportedly conveyed that the phrase "Free Palestine" and the image of the Palestinian flag were considered hurtful by many, and that Sheeran was hesitant to take sides publicly. Macklemore stated, "If those words were more offensive than tens of thousands of Palestinian children being killed by Israel, then there was a fundamental disconnect between where those people stood and where I stood."
