Robert Irwin, fresh off his victory in Season 34 of Dancing With the Stars, is stepping into a new role as host of the upcoming competition series, Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro. The show will feature 12 dancers vying for a professional spot on Season 35 of the main series.
Irwin, who hosts the new show, stated that the ideal contestant must offer more than just exceptional dance ability. "They have to be the best teacher, choreographer, storyteller, and therapist," Irwin told Decider. "They have to be able to do everything for their partner." He emphasized that age or extensive dance background are not necessarily deciding factors, as the show seeks individuals who are willing to commit fully to the role.
The judging panel will include Shirley Ballas, head judge of Strictly Come Dancing, and three-time DWTS winner Mark Ballas. A rotating cast of DWTS professionals will also join them as guest judges each week. Irwin noted the dynamic between the mother-son judging duo, describing their interactions as "hilarious" and a grounding element of the show.
Irwin confirmed he will also participate on the dance floor, reuniting with his former DWTS partner Witney Carson for a choreographed number later in the season. He expressed his continued enthusiasm for dancing, stemming from his own intensive learning experience on the show.
Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro is set to premiere on Monday, July 13, at 8 p.m. ET, with new episodes airing weekly.
