Robert Irwin's inaugural hosting of the 2026 Logie Awards has generated significant debate, with his opening monologue drawing both criticism and some praise. The 22-year-old conservationist, the youngest ever to host the Australian television awards, opened the ceremony with a dance routine before delivering remarks that some viewers and critics described as "painful" and a "horrific trainwreck."

During his monologue, Irwin included a joke referencing Karl Stefanovic's perceived shift to the political right. "Unfortunately Karl Stefanovic couldn't be here tonight," Irwin stated. "Which means we didn't have to hire as many bartenders. We have saved him a seat, which is over to the right. The far right." The camera then focused on Stefanovic's former TV rivals, Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington, who appeared unimpressed.

Irwin also touched upon his own experience with the reality show "I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!" and network programming, quipping about Channel 10's development of a reboot for "Hughesy, We Have a Problem." He suggested the show might be titled "No, seriously, Hughesy, we have a problem."

Social media reaction was swift and polarized. Many viewers expressed disappointment with the performance, with comments ranging from questioning the opening dance number to comparing Irwin unfavorably to past hosts. "The cringe line was crossed early," one user wrote, while another lamented the perceived decline of Australian television.

However, not all feedback was negative. Some audience members supported Irwin, with one fan writing, "I like Robert Irwin as host of The Logies, he should always be there, he is awesome." Another commented, "Robert is hilarious."

Despite the divided reception to his hosting, Irwin had previously called it a "massive honour" to make history as the youngest person to host the event. He also acknowledged the perception that award show hosts need to be cynical, stating his own preference for a positive outlook.
