Robert Griffin III's wife, Grete, has publicly voiced strong criticism of the Washington Commanders (formerly Redskins) regarding the team's management of her husband's career-altering injury. In a social media post, Grete Griffin stated she has "personal beef with everyone involved" in the situation.

Her comments followed an Instagram reel posted by Robert Griffin III, which depicted him in an old Washington Redskins uniform. He captioned the post, "Preparing for my Netflix documentary about why they kept running me when I only had 1 leg against Seattle in 2012."

The incident Griffin is referencing occurred in 2012 during his rookie season. Drafted as the No. 2 overall pick by Washington, Griffin had a historically successful debut, earning a Pro Bowl selection and Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. He led the team to a division title and a playoff appearance.

However, late in his rookie year, Griffin suffered an LCL sprain in early December. Despite the injury, he returned to play in a playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. Reports from USA Today at the time indicated that Griffin had not been medically cleared to play by his doctor, contrary to what head coach Mike Shanahan reportedly communicated. Griffin's return to the field led to further aggravation of his injury, ultimately requiring surgery on both his LCL and ACL. He never fully regained his previous form for the remainder of his NFL career, which concluded in 2020.

Grete Griffin, who married Robert Griffin III in March 2018 and was not with him during his time in Washington, expressed her strong feelings about the team's actions. The couple has three daughters together, and she is also a stepmother to his oldest daughter from a previous marriage.
