Robbie Williams Back in Contention for Royal Honor After Tax Row Resolution
Singer is reportedly being considered for an OBE or knighthood following an investigation that cleared his tax affairs.
Robbie Williams is once again being considered for a royal honor after a controversial tax dispute was resolved, paving the way for a potential OBE or even a knighthood.
The singer, 52, had previously been in line for an OBE in 2019 but the honor was blocked due to his involvement in a controversial investment scheme.
Williams was reportedly the first celebrity to be flagged on an 'honors blacklist' for wealthy individuals with questionable tax arrangements. However, a recent investigation has cleared his tax affairs, allowing his name to be put forward again by the charity and philanthropy committee.
A source told The Sun that Williams has raised "hundreds of millions for charity" through his work with UNICEF and Soccer Aid, an event he co-founded. "There are more hoops to get through, and it needs to go forward to the main honours committee and then the PM and ultimately the King," the source added.
Williams' representatives declined to comment when contacted by the Daily Mail.
Robbie Williams' contribution to the entertainment industry and his charity work, particularly with Soccer Aid, were the reasons for his initial nomination. Soccer Aid, which he co-founded in 2006, has raised over £137 million for UNICEF since its inception.
In 2015, Williams was linked to a film investment scheme operated by Ingenious Media, which required a £50,000 stake to defer tax liability. Investors were able to claim tax relief against almost the entire sum. The firm disputed claims of tax avoidance by HMRC, and a tribunal later found that while Ingenious traded legitimately, investors were not entitled to the claimed tax reliefs.
Another high-profile figure, David Beckham, faced similar scrutiny regarding his tax affairs in 2014 when he was close to receiving a knighthood. Concerns were raised about his involvement in an alleged tax avoidance scheme, though it was later deemed legitimate. Beckham eventually received his knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours list.
