Rob Gronkowski Criticizes NFL Officiating, Questions Patriots' Super Bowl Chances
Former NFL star Rob Gronkowski calls for accountability for referees and expresses doubt about his former team's prospects for another Super Bowl appearance.
Former NFL star Rob Gronkowski has voiced strong opinions on the state of officiating in the league, advocating for punishments for referees similar to those faced by players and coaches. In an interview with OutKick, Gronkowski highlighted the impact of questionable calls, particularly roughing-the-passer and pass interference penalties, on game outcomes.
"So yeah, I think, you know, it would be fair and square to, you know, put the referees on a pedestal as well and — and have punishment just like any coach or any NFL player can be punished just like that," Gronkowski stated. He noted that players can be cut from teams shortly after a poor performance, suggesting a similar level of accountability should extend to officials.
Gronkowski's comments align with recent criticism from other figures, including his former teammate Tom Brady, who questioned several calls during a Green Bay Packers game. "I don’t think the referees are doing that great of a job. I think they can definitely improve," Gronkowski said, emphasizing the need for accuracy to ensure fair play, especially as the postseason approaches.
He also reflected on his own experiences with offensive pass interference calls, describing situations where defenders would initiate contact with him, leading to a penalty against him despite his lack of action. "It just didn’t make any sense," he said.
Patriots' Super Bowl Aspirations
Gronkowski also cast doubt on the New England Patriots' chances of returning to the Super Bowl in the near future. He suggested that the team's previous Super Bowl appearance might have been aided by a less challenging schedule.
"Their schedule definitely was pretty, pretty simple last year. They’re playing tougher opponents this year, tougher defenses. I think that has more to play with it," Gronkowski explained. "I definitely think the schedule plays a part in it for sure. It really does."
While he believes the Patriots are a solid team capable of making the playoffs and potentially winning their division, he is not convinced they are currently Super Bowl contenders. "I just don’t see enough right now for them to be a potential, you know, Super Bowl candidate."
He attributed some of the team's struggles to offensive injuries and a lack of consistent playmakers. "They’re just having some problems right now, a couple injuries, injuries all across the offensive line. They’re depleted there. So I think the injuries, you know, to the offensive unit is playing a crucial part as well," he said. Gronkowski added that the return of key players like AJ Brown could help the offense improve.
Reflections on Leadership and Health
Looking back at his career, Gronkowski credited former Patriots coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady with shaping his professional approach. He recalled some of Belichick's unconventional rules, including a ban on burning incense in hotel rooms and requiring veteran players to stay in hotels during training camp even if they lived nearby.
"That definitely drove a couple of veteran players like myself crazy," Gronkowski admitted. Despite the strictness, he understood Belichick's philosophy, stating, "I would say just a mentality of bringing it at practice and also having just a winning mentality that, hey, no matter the situation, we’re going to come, we’re going to find a way to win this game."
He also highlighted Brady's leadership by example, particularly regarding nutrition and preparation. "He didn’t force it down anyone, but you just watch him. That’s what it’s all about is leading by example," Gronkowski said.
In his post-playing career, Gronkowski focuses on maintaining his health, utilizing practices like hot yoga, saunas, and float tanks. He is also promoting a wearable device from DNA Vibe that he uses for pain management.
Outlook on Emerging Quarterbacks and NFL Culture
Gronkowski drew parallels between Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy and Tom Brady, not in playing style, but in their ability to overcome adversity. He noted McCarthy's resilience after losing his starting job and being traded to the New York Giants, seeing a similar determination that fueled Brady's early career.
"That’s also very similar as well is when your number is called and you’re ready to go," Gronkowski said of McCarthy, expressing confidence that the quarterback can lead the Giants to the playoffs.
He also commented on the growing visibility of celebrity relationships in the NFL, such as Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift. Gronkowski believes these high-profile pairings have positively impacted the league by attracting new viewers and expanding its fanbase. "Overall I just see that it was very positive and it helped out tremendously because NFL wants to grow," he stated.
Looking ahead to entertainment, Gronkowski expressed anticipation for Jay-Z's performance as the Super Bowl LXI halftime performer, expecting a notable show given Jay-Z's involvement.
