Rob Gronkowski: Caleb Williams' Viral Injury Reaction Was About 'Passion,' Not Pain
The former NFL star believes the Chicago Bears quarterback's display was driven by his intense desire to play, not the severity of his hamstring injury.
Rob Gronkowski, the legendary former NFL tight end, offered his perspective on Caleb Williams' viral reaction to a hamstring injury sustained during the Chicago Bears' Week 2 game. Gronkowski suggested that Williams' dramatic response was fueled by "passion" for the game rather than the actual pain of the injury.
Williams' reaction, which included being helped off the field with a dragging leg and later covering his head with a towel on a cart to the locker room, drew criticism on social media after it became apparent the injury was not season-ending. Fans accused the quarterback of exaggerating his condition.
Gronkowski, speaking at a New York City event for his partnership with Bounty, suggested that Williams' lack of prior significant injury might have contributed to his reaction. "He’s never really been injured before from what I believe, so he doesn’t know truly what an injury is," Gronkowski stated. "And he was riding on a high. He had a great game Week 1, he was ready to play all year going into this season. I feel like it was more about passion that he showed than being hurt with the injury – that’s the thing."
Gronkowski, who played through numerous injuries during his 11-year NFL career, posited that if the injury was indeed "week-to-week," the pain level wouldn't typically elicit such a profound reaction. "If he’s week-to-week, it wasn’t the pain because I’ve had injuries. That’s not that much pain the way he went," Gronkowski explained. "But I would say he had so much passion going into the season, going into the game that. From my view and my opinion is that he was more hurt because he wasn’t sure how long of an injury that was and he wanted to be out there. He was just disappointed in that aspect."
From Gronkowski's viewpoint, the quarterback's initial on-field reaction might have suggested a more severe injury, possibly a Grade 3 hamstring strain. "If looked like it was a Grade 3 [strain], and Grade 3 I understand you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ That one would hurt. You’re going to be pissed, you’re going to be sad, and you know it’s blown out," he added.
The Chicago Bears have not officially ruled Williams out for Week 3. Head coach Ben Johnson described his franchise quarterback as "week-to-week" as the team assesses the injury. The team's backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent, is currently in concussion protocol, potentially leaving journeyman Case Keenum to start if Bagent is unavailable. However, Bagent participated in practice on Saturday, offering hope for his availability.
