Rob Beckett Reflects on 'Surreal' Celebrity Traitors Experience with Comedy Peers

Rob Beckett described his participation in the new series of Celebrity Traitors as a "surreal" experience, particularly due to competing alongside close friends and fellow comedians Romesh Ranganathan, Joe Lycett, and James Acaster.

Beckett, 40, noted the significant career progression of the group, recalling that nearly two decades ago, they were performing for audiences of only eight people in pubs. He expressed a sense of reflection seeing how far they have all come to now be part of a prominent television show.

"I think I'll just find the whole scenario hilarious because it's just so surreal to be around that group of people, and to be with a few people I know," Beckett stated. He specifically mentioned performing with Lycett and Acaster in pubs in Soho 20 years ago, highlighting the contrast with their current involvement in a major television competition.

Despite the camaraderie and shared history, Beckett affirmed that personal friendships would not deter him from playing the game strategically. "Oh yes, if it’s part of the game," he said when asked if he would betray his friends. "And I’d expect vice versa. If I get done, I get done."

Ranganathan echoed this sentiment, admitting that despite their decade-long friendship, he would be unable to fully trust Beckett within the game's context. "Well, it's weird, isn't it? Because Rob is one of my best friends, and we've worked together for a decade now, but I still won't be able to trust it," Ranganathan commented. "He's just as easily going to be on my side as he is going to twist the knife in my back given the opportunity. I mean, it's completely unpredictable."

Beckett also suggested that while he would be competitive, he would not let the game's outcomes affect him too deeply. "I'll be competitive, but if I get murdered or banished or whatever the situation is, of course I’ll be disappointed for a minute," he said. "And then I'll think, do you know what? I'm going home, and I’ve got a couple of weeks off!"

The new series of Celebrity Traitors is set to premiere on Thursday.
