Rob and Michele Reiner's Trust Fund Paid Over $348,000 for Son Nick's Defense in Their Murders
Nick Reiner used funds from the family trust to cover legal fees for his defense against charges of slaying his parents.
Nick Reiner, who has been indicted for the murder of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, utilized the family's trust fund to pay for his defense in the case. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, the trust fund disbursed nearly $348,000 to Nick Reiner's former defense lawyer, Alan Jackson.
Paul Kanin, the former administrator of the trust, revealed the payment, which covered Jackson's services for approximately two weeks before he withdrew from the case in January 2026. Jackson cited irreconcilable differences when he informed the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in Los Angeles on January 7, 2026, that he would be withdrawing from Reiner's defense.
Reiner had petitioned in June of the current year to access approximately $558,000 from the family trust, which holds between $1.5 million and $1.6 million. The trust was originally scheduled for a mandatory disbursement on his 30th birthday in September 2023. However, the trust's professional fiduciary and trustees have withheld the funds, citing California's Slayer Statute. This statute prohibits individuals from financially benefiting from the estate or trust of someone they intentionally killed.
Reiner's legal team has argued that the planned 2023 distribution was mandatory and predated the alleged murders in 2025. They further contend that the Slayer Statute is not applicable because Reiner has pleaded not guilty and has not been convicted of the crimes.
