A wildlife enthusiast, Mark Koster, has captured a series of photographs of a greater roadrunner on the campus of Scottsdale Community College in Arizona, with one image in particular drawing attention for the bird’s comical, open-mouthed expression. Koster observed that the bird, which appeared to be screaming, was in fact yawning.
Koster has been closely observing several roadrunners in the area since late April, noting that they have had two separate clutches of chicks. He described the captured moment as one of the funniest expressions he has witnessed on the bird.
Greater roadrunners are known for their hunting technique, which involves walking or running swiftly before rapidly pursuing prey. Their diet includes insects, lizards, rodents, and snakes. They use their sharp beaks to capture prey, sometimes smashing it against the ground or a rock before consumption, especially when finding food for their young.
