Supporters of California Rep. Ro Khanna have launched a fundraising group, dubbed "Run Ro," to build support for his potential presidential candidacy in 2028. The effort aims to ensure the progressive populist perspective is central to the presidential primary debate, according to NBC News.
Former New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman and progressive strategist Nomiki Konst are among those behind the initiative. Khanna acknowledged the support, stating that he has not yet decided whether to run for president but expressed openness to a platform advocating for Medicare for All, an end to foreign wars, and taxing billionaires, which he calls "America's Next New Deal."
Khanna, a Silicon Valley congressman, has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies. He previously clashed with California Governor Gavin Newsom over a proposed billionaire tax in the state, which appears headed for defeat. On Election Night, Khanna celebrated victories for candidates from minority backgrounds, remarking on the return of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
"Tonight, DEI is back as America celebrated diversity and inclusion," Khanna said in a video posted to X. He highlighted election results that included potential Black governors, the first Latina governor in Texas, and the first Muslim and gay senators.
Khanna has also made trips to other states, an indicator of potential national ambitions. In July, he reported being detained by armed Israeli settlers during a visit to the West Bank. He commented on the incident, suggesting it was not a wise move for Israelis to detain "long-shot presidential candidates."
