The Republican National Committee (RNC) has announced a significant increase in poll worker recruitment for the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, reporting it is 42% ahead of its pace from the 2024 cycle. This surge in volunteer sign-ups, with 16,971 nationwide compared to 11,917 at the same point in the previous presidential cycle, is part of a broader strategy to bolster election integrity efforts across 25 states.

Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters stated that the RNC has established its largest election integrity operation in party history, mobilizing thousands of volunteers to safeguard election processes. "With less than 90 days until the midterms, we’re seeing record-breaking grassroots engagement, expanding our operation into new states, and building the infrastructure needed to defy history in 2026," Gruters said. This initiative is driven by a focus on the mechanics of elections, a priority amplified following the 2020 election.

The RNC's election integrity unit has reportedly invested millions of dollars, with staff deployed in 22 states and a year-round voter protection operation nationwide. The committee highlighted that it has expanded recruitment into states including Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, Kentucky, Alaska, and Ohio. Gruters noted the party is involved in approximately 177 active lawsuits as part of a proactive approach to election integrity.

While the Democratic National Committee (DNC) also invests in voter protection, it did not provide specific 2026 recruitment numbers. However, the DNC shared data from 2021 to 2024, indicating it mobilized over 120,000 voter protection volunteers, including more than 65,000 trained poll observers. A DNC spokesperson affirmed their commitment to defending the right to vote and ensuring eligible voters have their voices heard, stating they have voter protection staff in over 30 states and will deploy tens of thousands of observers in November.

The RNC's efforts are particularly focused on states with "parity" laws, which require or encourage bipartisan representation among poll workers. The committee aims to build a substantial pool of Republican applicants to fill these required slots, thereby ensuring Republican representation in election administration. Gruters pointed to Florida as an example of efficient election result reporting, attributing it to faith and confidence in the process, which he believes can be replicated nationwide.

Both parties frame their election-related activities differently. Republicans describe their efforts as election integrity measures focused on transparency and rule enforcement, aiming to build confidence among GOP voters. Democrats characterize their work as voter protection, concentrating on ballot access and ensuring eligible voters can cast their ballots. National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, established in 2020, serves as a key observance for both parties to galvanize support and recruit personnel for election day operations.
