RJ Mitte's Mother Reflects on 'Red Flag' Before 'Breaking Bad' Star's Death at 34

RJ Mitte's mother, Dyna, has spoken about her son's death at age 34, revealing what she perceived as a "red flag" prior to his passing and sharing a heartfelt tribute that highlights his "deep empathy" and "neverending curiosity." Mitte, best known for his role as Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed series "Breaking Bad," died by suicide this month.

Dyna Mitte described her son as a "precious child" who was "inspiring and sharing his heart with everyone he met." She recalled his journey in managing cerebral palsy, a condition he was diagnosed with at age three, and his success in the acting community. Mitte became his family's primary financial support at 13 after a car accident left his mother paralyzed for years. "He succeeded and was always ready for the next challenge," Dyna wrote in an Instagram tribute.

She characterized life with her son as "a constant adventure," noting his enthusiasm for learning historical facts and exploring places during their travels. She expressed pride in his ability to overcome challenges and become a man "the world was just beginning to know." Mitte's deep empathy for others, particularly for those who needed a voice, was a quality his mother emphasized, stating it was a role he embraced.

Dyna revealed that she did not anticipate her son's death, as he was professionally active and engaged with a therapist. "Parents should listen to their children and watch for signs," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I thought RJ was in a place where we had gotten over the hump and that he was okay." The "red flag," she explained, was when he did not answer the phone, as they maintained regular contact.

She had begun to have "concerns" based on their conversations and encouraged him to speak with a counselor. "It’s always good to have an outside counselor, a third party with no 'skin in the game,' as we say in the South," she said.

Dyna also addressed speculation about Mitte's career and financial status, stating that these rumors were unfounded. "RJ had three movies that have already come out this year. He has two more coming out. He has already signed deals on several new movies that he was going to be filming," she clarified. She also mentioned plans for a book and a food truck, indicating he had numerous projects underway. A past financial issue with a manager was resolved years ago and was not connected to his death.

Regarding his personal life, Dyna mentioned that Mitte had seen his fiancée only a few times since she moved in December, acknowledging some struggles but declining to delve into private details.

Ultimately, Dyna believes her son experienced a mental health setback and made the decision to take his own life during a "weak moment." She acknowledged his personal troubles but stated the family never expected he would die by suicide. "A mother should never have to find her child that way. It's a hard pill to swallow," she said.

Mitte was remembered at a Celebration of Life ceremony in Brownsville, Texas. His former "Breaking Bad" co-stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul also paid tribute. Cranston expressed being in "deep despair," while Paul stated, "I am heartbroken over this news. RJ, I love you my friend. You will be missed."
