RJ Mitte's Mother Recalls Finding Son Dead by Suicide
Dyna Mitte shares the heartbreaking moment she discovered her son, the 'Breaking Bad' actor, had died.
Dyna Mitte, the mother of "Breaking Bad" actor RJ Mitte, has spoken about the devastating moment she found her 34-year-old son dead by suicide. In a recent interview, she recounted the morning of his death, describing how she called him but received no answer, which was unusual as he typically slept late.
"I called him at 11 [a.m.]," Dyna told NBC News. "He didn’t answer, so I picked up lunch and went to take it to him, and that’s when I discovered him."
Mitte indicated that her son did not appear to have left a note, suggesting his death may have been a spur-of-the-moment decision. While she was unaware of him experiencing overt mental health struggles, a close friend of RJ confided in Dyna that her son had been dealing with issues that were causing him significant pain.
"For the last three months, I’d been offering for him to go to therapy, trying to get him to go there, but he was like, ‘No, I’ve got it. It’s OK. I’m handling it,'" Dyna recalled.
She expressed regret, stating that if she could revisit that time, she would have insisted he seek professional help, even if it meant forcing him. "We all go through heartbreak in our life and we all deal with it differently," she said. "If I had known anything and could have done anything different, I truly would have. I would have given my life for his life."
Mitte hopes that by speaking out, she can help others facing similar struggles. "If me speaking out today might save someone else from going through the same situation, because a mother should never have to find their child this way," she stated. "If I can say one person is helped, I think that’s what RJ would expect."
RJ Mitte, described by his mother as a "special, special soul," was best known for his role as Walter "Flynn" White Jr. on the acclaimed series "Breaking Bad." Dyna called the experience an "incredible" one for her son, noting his deep affection for his cast and crew members.
A representative for RJ Mitte confirmed to Page Six that his cause of death was suicide. In the aftermath of his death, several "Breaking Bad" co-stars, including Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn, paid tribute to Mitte.
Cranston, who played Mitte's on-screen father, expressed his "deep despair" and called the news "especially devastating." Gunn, who portrayed his on-screen mother, shared that she was "immediately struck by the depth and complexity" of Mitte when they first met at age 14.
