An adult river otter sustained head trauma after being struck by a vehicle and left by a hit-and-run driver in Vacaville, California, on Friday. The animal was discovered near Leisure Town Road and Foxborough Road, an area known for vehicle-wildlife collisions.
Bystanders found the injured otter in the road and remained with it until animal control arrived. The Solano Wildlife Rescue and Education Center, a Fairfield-based nonprofit, is providing medical care and rehabilitation for the animal.
According to the Wildlife Center, the otter did not suffer any broken bones but is experiencing head swelling, which is expected to subside over a seven to 10-day treatment period. The center aims to rehabilitate injured animals and return them to the wild.
Recently, the Solano Wildlife Rescue and Education Center has also treated an opossum with a fractured jaw and rescued a coyote from illegal trapping. The organization is seeking donations to support the care of the injured otter and other wildlife through its website, PayPal, or Zelle.
