Former England footballer Rio Ferdinand has reunited with his wife Kate and their children after six weeks apart, sharing the emotional moment in an Instagram video.
Ferdinand had been working in the US for the World Cup, leaving his wife Kate to manage their household in Dubai with their children Cree, 4, and Shae, 2, as well as his stepchildren Tate, 17, and Tia, 14.
The video captured the moment Ferdinand's taxi arrived home, with his children running to embrace him. His youngest son Cree exclaimed, "Daddy!! I've got my daddy here," as he jumped into his father's arms, followed by his sister Shae. Tia also joined in for a hug before Kate received a kiss and hug from her husband.
Kate shared her joy in a post, writing, "A very long 6 weeks without our @rioferdy5, we’ve all missed him so much. Couldn’t be happier to have him home." She had previously spoken about the challenges of solo parenting while Ferdinand was away, sharing her efforts to "hold it together" and even a countdown chart her children made in anticipation of his return.
Ferdinand and Kate began dating in 2017, two years after the death of his first wife, Rebecca, in 2015. Kate moved into the family home in 2018 and they married a year later. Kate has been open about the difficulties of becoming a step-parent, launching the Blended podcast to support others in similar situations. She and Rio, along with Tate, have discussed their journey to building a strong blended family on the podcast. Tate admitted to initially having a strained relationship with Kate, driven by loyalty to his late mother, and engaging in behaviors to sabotage his father's relationship. He described feeling guilt over liking Kate and being caught between loyalty to his mother and his growing appreciation for his stepmother. These feelings persisted for a couple of years before he was able to fully embrace Kate's role in his life. Tate also recounted instances where misunderstandings, such as a Valentine's Day balloon delivery and a package delivery, were twisted into false narratives about Kate's behavior.
The family has also addressed the complexities of authority in a blended family, with Tate explaining his initial resistance to Kate's attempts to guide him, feeling she had no right to tell him what to do. Kate acknowledged her role in setting boundaries but emphasized the effort to create a functional family dynamic. She has previously written about feeling like she was "walking in the steps of someone else’s life" as she navigated bonding with her stepchildren after their mother's passing.
