Actor Rick Moranis is returning to live-action acting after nearly three decades to reprise his role as Lord Dark Helmet in "Spaceballs: The New One," a sequel to the 1987 cult classic. The 71-year-old actor stepped away from the entertainment industry at the height of his career following the death of his wife.

Moranis, known for his roles in "Ghostbusters," "Little Shop of Horrors," and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids," last appeared on screen in 1997's "Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves." He made a rare public appearance in July at San Diego Comic-Con to promote the "Spaceballs" sequel, where he was met with a standing ovation. He appeared on stage wearing the character's signature helmet alongside director Josh Greenbaum, screenwriters Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, and co-stars Daphne Zuniga, Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Lewis Pullman. Original cast members Bill Pullman, George Wyner, and Mel Brooks are also returning.

Moranis stated that the timing and the people involved convinced him to return. "This came along right at the right time, and I started talking to these folks and hearing who was going to be in it," Moranis said, according to People. "I spoke to Josh Greenbaum and I heard that Bill Pullman was coming back and that Lewis was going to be in it too, and it just felt like this is it. It’s time and — yes. I said yes, and it is the best decision I’ve ever made."

After his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky, died in 1991, Moranis prioritized raising their two children. He clarified in a 2015 interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he had not retired but had taken a break. "I was working with really interesting people, wonderful people," he reflected. "I went from that to being at home with a couple of little kids, which is a very different lifestyle. But it was important to me. I have absolutely no regrets whatsoever. My life is wonderful."

Although he stepped away from live-action films, Moranis continued to do voice acting, including roles in "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer & the Island of Misfit Toys," "Brother Bear," and as Dark Helmet in "The Goldbergs."

Moranis's return follows a trend of actors taking extended breaks from Hollywood and then making notable comebacks. Actress Cameron Diaz stepped away from acting in 2014 after starring in "Annie" to focus on her family and launch her Avaline wine brand. She returned in 2024 with the Netflix film "Back in Action" opposite Jamie Foxx and has several other projects lined up.

Lindsay Lohan, who struggled with legal issues and substance abuse, moved to Dubai in 2014 for a fresh start. She began her acting comeback in 2022 with the Netflix movie "Falling for Christmas" and is set to star in the upcoming Hulu limited series "Count My Lies."

Other notable comebacks include Ke Huy Quan, who won an Academy Award for his role in "Everything Everywhere All at Once" after a two-decade hiatus from acting; Daniel Day-Lewis, who returned for the 2025 film "Anemone" after announcing his retirement; Renée Zellweger, who came back after a six-year break to star in "Bridget Jones's Baby" and later won an Oscar for "Judy"; Macaulay Culkin, who returned to acting after a childhood stardom hiatus with "Party Monster"; and Pamela Anderson, who reinvented her career with a Broadway debut and acclaimed roles after stepping away from the spotlight.
