Richard Riehle, Versatile Character Actor in 'Office Space' and Over 400 Projects, Dies at 78

Veteran actor Richard Riehle, widely recognized for his role as Tom Smykowski in the 1999 cult classic film "Office Space," has died at the age of 78.

Riehle passed away from natural causes last Thursday in Los Angeles, according to a report by TMZ. Throughout his extensive career, Riehle amassed a filmography of over 400 acting credits.

While his portrayal of the beleaguered employee in "Office Space" remains a fan favorite, Riehle's career spanned a diverse range of genres and productions. He appeared as the guard who facilitated Harrison Ford's escape in the 1993 thriller "The Fugitive" and played Rob Schneider's father in the 1999 comedy "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo."

Fans of independent and arthouse cinema may recall Riehle's contributions to Gregg Araki's "Mysterious Skin" and Todd Solondz's "Palindromes." The actor also made notable appearances in the horror genre, including the 2006 cult slasher "Hatchet," Rob Zombie's "Halloween II," and "Texas Chainsaw 3D."

His comedic roles were numerous and included performances in "Smiley Face," "Joe Dirt," "Bridesmaids," "Pauly Shore's Jury Duty," and "Pee-wee's Big Holiday." Additionally, Riehle lent his talents to action films such as "Executive Decision," "Mercury Rising," and "Lethal Weapon 4."
