Richard Morecroft, a distinguished figure in Australian broadcasting known for his work with ABC and SBS, has died at the age of 70. His family announced his peaceful passing on Tuesday evening, stating he died "at a time of his choosing" on the south coast of NSW.

Morecroft had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and was surrounded by his partner of 36 years, Alison Mackay, at the time of his death. His family shared the news via his Instagram page, expressing their devastation at the loss of a "warm, generous and caring human."

"Vale Richard Morecroft 20/01/56 - 06/10/26," the post concluded, along with a message to those who knew him through his television work to remember him fondly.

Morecroft's career in broadcasting began in the 1980s when he joined the ABC, where he became the presenter of the flagship evening current affairs program, The 7.30 Report. He later became widely recognized for his role as the presenter of ABC's Lateline.

In 2010, Morecroft transitioned to SBS Television, where he took on the hosting duties for the popular game show Letters and Numbers. Throughout his career, he was known for his professionalism and calm demeanor.

In his later years, Morecroft also became involved with environmental causes, dedicating his time to organizations like Landcare and showing a keen interest in conservation efforts.

Fellow media personalities shared tributes to Morecroft, remembering him as a "gentleman" and a "gentle man." ABC host Leigh Sales described him as "pure class in every way – a kind, warm and generous colleague, as well as being a consummate professional."

Artist Harriet Goodall also paid tribute, acknowledging his support for artists and expressing gratitude that he was able to make choices about his end of life.
