Richard Gere, 76, and his wife Alejandra, 43, marked the Fourth of July holiday with a family celebration in New York City. The couple shared a rare family photo while on a boat tour near the Statue of Liberty.
Gere and his wife, who is a Galician publicist, were accompanied by their two sons, Alexander, seven, and James, six. The family also celebrated with a picnic on a beach and watched fireworks. Alejandra Gere shared a slideshow of images on Instagram, reflecting on their life and the holiday.
"Deeply grateful for a life built between two countries, two cultures, and so many people we love," Alejandra captioned the post. "Today, we celebrate connection, family, friendship, and everything that reminds us that home is not only a place, but the people we carry in our hearts. Happy Fourth of July to our family and friends across the United States."
Earlier on the day of the celebration, the couple, who co-chair the Gere Foundation, also took a nature walk. Alejandra Gere noted that "the best weekends don't need big plans" but rather "quality time, nature, unhurried conversations."
Gere is also stepfather to Alejandra's 11-year-old son, Albert, from a previous marriage. The couple met in 2004 and were reintroduced in 2014. They reportedly use Tibetan Buddhism as a shared practice to aid in raising their sons.
"She is always really good with [saying]: 'Okay, I know I want to strangle you right now, but I'm going to take a deep breath and we're going to talk through this,'" Gere told HELLO! magazine in November, speaking about his wife's parenting style. "Introducing the kids to Buddhism and what it means is important," Alejandra added.
Gere's eldest son, Homer, was welcomed during his 11-year marriage to ex-wife Carey Lowell. Homer, 26, is also pursuing an acting career and is set to appear in Ryan Murphy's adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel "The Shards," premiering August 5 on FX/Hulu. Gere commented on his son's budding career, telling People in June that Homer is "really good" and "preternaturally knows what he's doing."
