Richard E. Grant's 'Celebrity Traitors' Debut Tarnished by Early Confession
The actor revealed his 'Traitor' status minutes after expressing joy, drawing both criticism and amusement from viewers.
Actor Richard E. Grant experienced a swift downfall in his debut on the BBC's "Celebrity Traitors" after revealing his status as a Traitor within minutes of the show's start. This uncharacteristic slip-up occurred shortly after Grant expressed profound happiness, following the advice of his late wife, Joan.
Joan, who passed away in September 2021 after a battle with stage four lung cancer, had advised Grant four days before her death to "try and find a pocket full of happiness in each day." Grant, sharing his grief journey on Instagram, conveyed that he felt he had found "a wheelbarrow full and then some" of happiness upon being nominated as a Traitor.
However, this unbridled joy led to a significant game-play error. While conversing with fellow contestant Joe Lycett, Lycett directly asked Grant about his role, to which Grant responded, "A Traitor," with a wide grin. Lycett noted the unprecedented move, remarking, "I think you've just done something that has never happened in the game... bold strategy."
Viewers on social media reacted with a mix of amusement and disbelief, with some suggesting Grant's confession might be a deliberate double-bluff. Others commented on his immediate struggles to manage the scrutiny.
Fellow contestant Jerry Hall defended Grant, stating she did not believe he was a Traitor, citing his history of eccentric behavior. "He says and does eccentric things. He is an amazing guy, but he is acting out because he wasn't chosen," Hall said.
Grant, reflecting on his tactical error, acknowledged, "That may be the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life," and added, "I was so thrilled to be picked as a Traitor but I clearly need to diffuse all the heat coming in my direction."
Grant has previously spoken about how becoming a grandfather has influenced his perspective on life, emphasizing the importance of not wasting time, particularly after his wife's passing. The birth of his grandson, he noted, highlighted his own mortality in a way that prompted him to "think forwardly" and value finite time.
