Actor Richard E. Grant made his return to the West End stage on Thursday night, starring in the opening of Noel Coward's play "Hay Fever" at London's Wyndham’s Theatre. The performance marked Grant's first West End appearance in over two decades. He plays David, a narcissist novelist, opposite Christine Baranski, who portrays his eccentric actress wife, in the comedy.

The play, which also features Grant's first West End performance in over 20 years, has received positive reviews, with critics describing it as "a light and delicious West End confection" and praising its "fine cast."

Coinciding with his theatrical debut, the first episode of the BBC's "Celebrity Traitors" also aired on Thursday, featuring Grant as one of the contestants. During the show, Grant admitted to being a "Traitor" to fellow contestant Joe Lycett within the first five minutes of the episode, an action that quickly became a talking point on social media. Fans debated whether the move was a genuine mistake or a strategic bluff.

As the first episode of Celebrity Traitors aired, the actor was treading the boards at London's Wyndham’s Theatre, starring opposite Christine Baranski in a new production of Hay Fever

Grant acknowledged the potential misstep, stating, "That may be the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life." He added, "I was so thrilled to be picked as a Traitor but I clearly need to diffuse all the heat coming in my direction."

Fellow contestant Jerry Hall defended Grant, saying she did not believe he was a Traitor and that he is known for eccentric behavior. "He says and does eccentric things. He is an amazing guy, but he is acting out because he wasn't chosen," she stated.

Earlier on Thursday, Grant began his day with a walk with his grandson, sharing a message of "pocketfuls of happiness" on Instagram. This mantra, he explained, was adopted from his late wife, Joan Washington, who encouraged him to find joy daily during his grief following her death in September 2021 after a lung cancer diagnosis.

Richard started his red letter day with a dawn walk around his Richmond neighbourhood with his baby grandson, gleefully telling his 1m Insta followers that he had 'pocketfuls of happiness'

"Hay Fever" is scheduled to run at Wyndham’s Theatre until December 12, and "Celebrity Traitors" continues on BBC One on Thursdays.

It was Richard's other Thursday night performance which had the nation talking though

It was an evening to remember for the star, 69, as he performed in the opening night of the Noel Coward play, marking his first West End stage performance in over 20 years
