Richard Branson Honors Late Wife Joan With New Virgin Atlantic Plane

Richard Branson has unveiled a new Virgin Atlantic aircraft adorned with a portrait of his late wife, Joan, as a tribute to her memory. The jet has been named 'Viva Forever,' after Lady Branson's favorite Spice Girls song.

Lady Joan Sarah Drummond Branson passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 80, following complications from a back injury. Her portrait on the new aircraft includes personal touches such as the Branson family tartan, a heart-shaped necklace, and the rings she wore daily.

Branson shared his sentiments on Instagram, stating, 'So touching to see Virgin Atlantic’s new plane paying tribute to my wonderful wife, Joan.' He highlighted her integral role in the airline's history, from joining the inaugural flight in 1984 to conceptualizing the onboard loose change donation for charity, a practice adopted by airlines worldwide.

Virgin Atlantic has a tradition of naming aircraft after notable women and featuring a 'flying lady' icon. In 2021, an Airbus A350 was named 'Fearless Lady' in honor of Sir Richard's mother, Eve Branson. In 2024, the 'Ruby Rebel' was launched for the airline's 40th anniversary, inspired by Holly Branson and featuring a bracelet with initials significant to the family.

Sir Richard and Lady Branson, originally from Glasgow, met in 1976. They were married for 50 years and had three children: Holly, Sam, and Clare Sarah, who died shortly after birth in 1979. Branson recalled his wife as his 'best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world.' Their daughter Holly also shared an emotional tribute, remembering her mother as 'one in a billion, brilliant and kind.' The family held a memorial gathering for her on Necker Island.
