Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is hosting "The Real Food Show," a new government-produced cooking series aimed at demonstrating how Americans can prepare healthy meals at home for less than $5 per serving. The series, launched Thursday on the HHS website and YouTube, emphasizes using whole, minimally processed ingredients.
"Food should be the foundation of our health," Kennedy stated in an announcement. "With 'The Real Food Show,' we're empowering Americans to take control of their health one meal at a time. Healthy eating doesn't have to be expensive, and cooking at home can be faster, easier and more rewarding than people think."
Each episode features Kennedy alongside notable chefs preparing budget-friendly meals inspired by the principles of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement. The premiere episode featured celebrity chef Andrew Gruel, and together they prepared crispy wild Alaskan salmon cakes with an apple, white bean, and greens salad.
Gruel stated his belief that the series' mission extends beyond recipes, aiming to encourage home cooking and help rebuild basic culinary skills he feels have been diminished by reliance on convenience foods. "My hope is that this series helps demystify cooking and shows people that preparing crave-worthy, healthy meals doesn't require professional training or expensive ingredients," Gruel said.
The recipes are designed to be practical, approachable, and affordable, with a focus on whole ingredients. Gruel highlighted salmon cakes as an example, noting that salmon is nutrient-dense, versatile, and can be affordable, particularly when using frozen options. "They're a great example of how you can take a high-quality protein, combine it with a handful of simple pantry ingredients and create a meal that's both satisfying and family-friendly," he explained.
Gruel expressed confidence that meals under $5 per serving are achievable, especially when using cost-effective ingredients like canned or frozen salmon. He aims for viewers to gain "kitchen confidence," enabling them to cook nutritious, affordable meals at home using real ingredients, rather than aspiring to be professional chefs.
The initiative aligns with public sentiment, as a Fox News poll indicated strong support for government focus on food safety and clearer labeling. Kennedy's involvement in the MAHA movement has reportedly influenced major food brands and is connected to former President Trump's health agenda.
