CNN anchor Dana Bash faced online criticism following a heated exchange with Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Sunday, during which the independent presidential candidate accused the network of misrepresenting information about the COVID-19 pandemic. The interview, part of CNN's State of the Union program, became contentious when Kennedy Jr. raised concerns about how dissenting medical experts were treated during the pandemic.
Kennedy Jr. alleged that CNN, along with other media outlets, engaged in "press malpractice" by marginalizing and vilifying doctors who questioned prevailing pandemic-era public health guidance. He contended that the network uncritically promoted a "progressive agenda" by relying on select "experts" while ignoring others, citing recently released diary entries that some Republican lawmakers claim show Dr. Anthony Fauci, then a leading public health official, misled the public about the virus's origins and effective containment strategies.
During the interview, Kennedy Jr. directly challenged Bash, stating, "You weren't doing your job, and your job is a fierce skepticism toward authority. You weren't doing that. You were beating up on people who were dissenting." He further accused the network of "punishing people for not trusting the experts" and promoting those with whom they shared political views.
Bash defended her role and CNN's coverage, asserting, "My job is to get as much information as I can. And what we were doing... with COVID and, and still with regard to these vaccines is getting the best information, the best science that we can, and putting it out there." The interview devolved into a back-and-forth, with Bash at times speaking over Kennedy Jr.
The exchange drew a range of reactions from commentators. Some, like media commentator Greg Price and the right-wing account Johnny MAGA, echoed Kennedy Jr.'s critique, with Price writing that Kennedy Jr. "called out Dana Bash for the media's role in lying to America about covid." Others, including former Florida Republican Representative Matt Gaetz, described the exchange as "incredible."
Even some who have been critical of Kennedy Jr. acknowledged the dynamic. Mehdi Hasan, a progressive commentator, suggested Bash appeared "unprepared" and allowed Kennedy Jr. to make "multiple false and dangerous claims." Hasan also noted that if media outlets platform controversial figures, they must be prepared to counter their claims.
CNN, in a statement to the Daily Mail, defended Bash's interview, calling her a "veteran journalist" who conducted a "newsmaking interview." A spokesperson stated, "Asking tough, substantive questions to those in power is the job of every journalist, and Dana did hers incredibly well. We stand behind Dana, her reporting, and CNN’s overall coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic."
The interview also touched upon Bash's previously reported friendly texts to Dr. Fauci in 2021, where she expressed appreciation for his handling of questions from Republican Congressman Jim Jordan during a hearing. While Kennedy Jr. did not explicitly mention these texts during the Sunday interview, they have been cited by critics as an example of CNN's perceived deference to Fauci during the pandemic.
