Retired SF Sergeant Allegedly Kills Wife, Daughter, Then Himself in Bay Area Home
Investigators are treating the incident as a murder-suicide at an upscale Mill Valley residence.
Authorities are investigating a suspected murder-suicide that occurred Sunday evening at an upscale home in Mill Valley, California, where a retired San Francisco police sergeant allegedly killed his wife and adult daughter before taking his own life.
Police responded to reports of gunfire at the approximately $2 million residence shortly after 5 p.m. Inside, officers discovered three deceased individuals. Investigators believe the deceased to be Kevin Mannix, 68, his estranged wife Ann Mannix, 65, and their 24-year-old daughter, Katie.
Kevin Mannix, a retired San Francisco Police Department sergeant, is believed to have fatally shot Ann Mannix, who had served as an SFPD Deputy Chief, and Katie Mannix before turning the weapon on himself, according to sources cited by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Derrick Lew, the current Chief of the San Francisco Police Department, informed the department of the deaths in a message on Sunday. "It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Ann and Kevin Mannix," Lew stated, urging officers to keep the family in their prayers and noting the availability of support services.
The San Francisco Police Officers Association released a statement expressing the department's shock and grief. "Ann Mannix was a trailblazer in our department - becoming the first woman to join and lead the SWAT team, and rising to lead both the Field Operations and Special Operations Bureaus," the association wrote on Facebook. "Many worked alongside Kevin during his 27 years of dedicated service at Taraval Station and beyond. To see their lives, and the life of their 24-year-old daughter Katie, end in such a horrific and senseless manner is a burden that weighs heavily on every officer, active and retired."
Investigators have not yet released details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident and are awaiting a search warrant to process the scene. The Marin County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the investigation is active and ongoing, with a focus on determining the relationships between the victims and the sequence of events.
