Retired Postal Worker Freed Without Bail After Alleged Subway Slaying Attempt

A 70-year-old retired postal worker accused of slashing a 68-year-old woman in the face inside a Brooklyn subway station was released without bail Sunday. Eric McCoy appeared in Brooklyn Criminal Court on charges including felony assault with intent to cause harm with a weapon, illegal weapons possession, and harassment.

The incident occurred at an emergency-exit door of the Sheepshead Bay B and Q station. According to a criminal complaint, McCoy allegedly held a knife to the woman's cheek and said, "Do you want more?" before cutting her face.

McCoy pleaded not guilty to the charges. Judge Christopher Whitehair released him on his own recognizance with an order of protection for the victim. His next court date is in January. The top assault charge carries a potential prison sentence of up to seven years.

This attack occurred hours before another incident in which a man was shot and killed in a Midtown Manhattan subway station. The suspect in that shooting remains at large.

Statistics from the NYPD indicate that felony assault in the city's transit system has increased by 12% this year compared to the same period last year, with 525 incidents reported. Misdemeanor assault has seen a 16% rise, with 1,304 crimes reported over the same timeframe.
