Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Dave Flippo, a Republican candidate for Nevada's second congressional district, has voiced strong support for former President Donald Trump's strategy regarding Iran, asserting that the former president's actions are effectively ending a protracted conflict. Flippo, who secured the Republican nomination with Trump's endorsement, believes this approach contrasts sharply with media portrayals suggesting Trump is provoking further hostilities.
Flippo, who spent a significant portion of his military career in the Middle East, stated that Trump's policies concerning the Strait of Hormuz and Iran are bringing a 47-year-old conflict to a close. "In my opinion, he's ending it," Flippo said, referencing the ongoing tensions involving Iran, Israel, Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis. He emphasized the need for open waterways and a restored flow of oil, aligning with Trump's stated objectives.
Flippo is running on a platform of constitutional conservatism in a district that leans Republican, though it is considered a swing district. He defeated an establishment-backed primary opponent, attributing his victory to voters seeking candidates who will actively fight for their interests rather than seeking a moderate middle ground. "I think we need fighters in Congress," Flippo stated. "I think we need people in Congress that are ready to stand up, stand up for the American people, and here in Nevada, stand up for Nevadans."
Fiscal and Immigration Concerns
Beyond foreign policy, Flippo highlighted fiscal responsibility and immigration as key issues. He advocates for a balanced budget and controlling the national debt, which he noted is approaching $39 trillion. "We have to stop spending money that we don't have," he said, emphasizing a need to curb government expansion and adhere to a constitutional interpretation of government's limited purposes.
Flippo also addressed illegal immigration, framing it as an economic issue. He expressed concern about the impact of what he described as open-border policies under the current administration, estimating that 20 to 30 million individuals have entered the country. He argued that this influx strains public resources, increases housing costs due to supply and demand imbalances, and places a significant financial burden on taxpayers through increased demand for schools, police, fire departments, and social services.
Electoral Outlook in Nevada
Flippo's campaign aims to appeal to the conservative sentiment in northern Nevada, which he believes is distinct from the southern part of the state. He noted that Trump won his district by a 14-point margin, despite the district being R+7. He anticipates that Trump's endorsement, along with support from Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo, will be crucial in the general election.
He faces former Nevada Assembly Majority Leader Teresa Benitez-Thompson in the general election. Flippo contrasted his conservative stance with Benitez-Thompson's voting record, which he characterized as supportive of big government spending, tax increases, and funding for organizations like Planned Parenthood. "She has a voting record that she says she's very proud of. And I don't believe that's something to be proud of," Flippo remarked.
Flippo's military background and his alignment with Trump's policy positions are central to his campaign narrative as he seeks to represent Nevada's second district in Congress.
