A retired FBI supervisory agent warned of a dangerous rise in what he called an "assassination culture" after investigators revealed that the suspected gunman in the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk lived with a transgender roommate with whom he was romantically involved.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, whose booking photo was released by Utah officials. Investigators and local officials said the roommate has cooperated with authorities and is not accused of wrongdoing. Family members reportedly turned the suspect in to police, and Robinson is awaiting formal charges as the probe continues. Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, was shot after answering an audience question that referenced past shootings by individuals who identified as transgender; he left behind a wife and two young children.

James Gagliano, a retired FBI supervisory agent, described a layered process he said leads some people to carry out public killings framed as political or ideological statements. On Sunday he outlined what he called the stages of "assassination culture": the formation of a grievance, an increasing conviction that one's own beliefs are superior, and moral absolutism that permits violence.

"We’re seeing this new ideation, which is assassination culture. What does that consist of?" Gagliano said. "You believe that you are superior. Your thinking is superior. And I have the right to take your life because I disagree with you." He added that the FBI will probe whether the suspect acted alone or was inspired, directed, or supported by others.

Investigators have said the probe is "layered," seeking to determine motive, any ideological influences and whether anyone provided material assistance. Criminal defense attorney Josh Ritter, appearing on television, said the roommate could be a "wealth of information" about Robinson’s motivations and state of mind. Ritter suggested investigators would examine the timing of the shooting relative to Kirk’s remarks and whether Robinson intended the act as a public statement.

Officials have emphasized that the cooperating roommate is not a suspect. Law enforcement accounts say the shooting occurred moments after an audience member asked Kirk about previous shootings by people who identified as transgender and Kirk responded; shortly thereafter Robinson allegedly opened fire.

Gagliano placed the incident in a broader historical context, noting the United States' long record with political violence and assassinations. "In our 250-year history, four sitting presidents have been assassinated," he said, adding that such events have, sadly, become a part of the national experience. He said the FBI will "probe more deeply" into why the suspect allegedly carried out the attack in the manner he did.

Kirk, a prominent conservative organizer and commentator, had been on a national speaking tour. Officials did not offer a timeline for potential charges against Robinson and said investigative steps include interviews, digital and forensic analysis and review of any possible communications or material support networks.

The investigation comes amid heightened concern among law enforcement and national security experts about ideologically motivated violence and the role of online radicalization. Authorities said they will pursue avenues to determine whether the act was solitary or tied to broader networks, and will evaluate any evidence of direction or assistance.

As law enforcement continues its inquiry, public officials and legal analysts have stressed the importance of separating the factual timeline and evidence from speculation about motive. The cooperating roommate and family members who assisted investigators have been cited by officials as key sources of information as prosecutors and agents assemble the case.

Authorities asked anyone with additional information about the incident to contact investigators. The case remains under active investigation as officials work to determine the full set of circumstances surrounding the killing and whether charges beyond those pending against the suspect will follow.
