Retail Giants Clash as Walmart Launches Fall Sale Ahead of Amazon's Prime Event

Walmart has initiated its fall shopping blitz, launching its six-day "Fall Deal Event" on October 5, one day before Amazon's competing "Prime Big Deal Days" sale begins.

This head-to-head competition highlights the intensifying rivalry between the two retail behemoths, who have increasingly encroached on each other's traditional markets. Amazon has expanded its presence in groceries and fast delivery, while Walmart has invested heavily in its online operations.

Walmart's sale, running through October 11, offers discounts across electronics, home goods, kitchenware, fashion, toys, and everyday essentials. A key differentiator is that Walmart's deals are accessible to all shoppers, without requiring a paid membership, contrasting with Amazon's Prime-exclusive offers.

This strategic move by Walmart comes as its e-commerce business shows significant growth, with global online sales up 24 percent in its latest quarter and its advertising business surging 37 percent.

In February, Amazon surpassed Walmart as the world's largest company by annual revenue, reporting $716.9 billion in sales compared to Walmart's $713.2 billion. Walmart had held the top position for over a decade.

Despite Amazon's overall revenue lead, Walmart is leveraging its extensive network of physical stores, which serve as effective local fulfillment hubs for online orders. This strategy allows for quick, same-day fulfillment, a capability that Amazon has also been developing.

Analysts note that while Amazon may have a reputation for online mega-sales, consumers are advised to compare prices, as the gap between the two retailers on identical items is often narrow. A recent analysis found that while Amazon offered slightly lower prices on average, the difference was only about four percent, with both companies matching prices 75 percent of the time.

The retail sales battle extends beyond these two giants, with other retailers like Target and Wayfair also holding their own promotional events in October. However, some consumers have expressed fatigue with these sales events, citing predictability and rapidly disappearing deals.

Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days is scheduled for October 6, offering deals to Prime members, who pay $14.99 per month or $139 annually, with an option for a 30-day free trial.
