Resort Accessibility Reviewed for Wheelchair Users
An all-inclusive resort in Turkey aims for superior accessibility, offering specialized equipment and thoughtful service.
The Tui Blue Sensatori Akra Sorgun, an all-inclusive resort located on Turkey's southern coast, has been evaluated for its accessibility features for wheelchair users. The resort offers an amphibious beach wheelchair designed for use on sand and in shallow water, along with adapted rooms and pool hoists.
During a visit, the resort's spacious layout, with tables and sun loungers generously spaced, was noted. Routes through the main building were described as wide and smooth. Rooms provide ample space, large balconies, and beds at a manageable height, with bedside controls for lighting and air conditioning, and emergency pull cords. The wet-room features a level-access shower, fold-down seat, grab rails, and a handheld shower head. However, minor issues included fixed toiletry dispensers and a caddy being out of reach from the shower seat, and a coffee table that required moving to access the balcony, which had a threshold needing a determined push.
Accessibility to the adults-only pool was via a level route with wide, shallow steps, and a pool hoist was available. A second hoist served the family pool. Waiter service at the adults-only pool allowed guests to remain seated. Accessing the indoor spa pool presented challenges, requiring staff to unlock an external patio door due to stairs at the main entrance, with a small threshold remaining that needed assistance.
The resort's topography was identified as a significant barrier, with steep slopes leading to the beach, beachside restaurants, entertainment area, and an outdoor wellbeing platform. While assistance from a companion and staff enabled access, an independent manual wheelchair user might find these routes difficult. TUI confirmed that its Assisted Travel team can facilitate the provision of mobility scooters or powerchairs.
The outdoor wellbeing platform, despite the effort to reach it, became a favored spot for activities like gong bath meditation. Staff were noted for understanding the balance between offering help and taking over, assisting with seating, slopes, and alternative entrances without drawing undue attention. The main buffet area also offered wide routes, with most dishes within reach, and staff readily assisted when needed.
Small gestures, such as a TUI team member rinsing sand from shoes and feet after a visit to the beach, were highlighted as contributing to the overall positive experience. The review suggests that while improvements have been made in accessible travel over the past two decades, careful planning and resort selection remain crucial for a seamless holiday.
